Late Summer Plumbing Tips

Winter is a long way off, but you can still start preparing for it.

At least according to the calendar, summer is drawing to a close. The kids are heading back to school, and soon it’ll be time to start getting ready for the fall. Of course, the temperatures here in Abilene will still be high for many weeks to come, and unlike our neighbors to the north, we don’t have to worry about getting our yards and plumbing ready for a long, harsh winter.

But at the same time, there are things you can do to get your plumbing ready for the cooler months ahead. Take a little time out of these last lazy weeks of summer to prepare your plumbing for the fall with these tips!

1. Inspect your hoses.
You’ve probably been using your hose a lot this summer to water plants, wash cars, fill water balloons, and ambush and soak unsuspecting family members. Now is a great time to give those hoses a quick once-over. Leaks or holes can result in wasted water, leading to high water bills. Fix any leaks or replace the hoses as soon as possible.

2. Keep an eye out for sewer line blockages.
Summer is the growing season, and the roots of your plants and trees have spent it in search of water. You want to make sure that they haven’t found a water source in your sewer line. Root blockages can be very expensive to fix, so it’s best to catch them early. Inspect your yard for unexpected wet spots (especially near your sewer lines) and give us a call if you find one.

3. Have your water heater inspected.
Right now, a hot bath might seem like the last thing you want. But remember, you need hot water for cleaning and laundry, and you’ll definitely appreciate warm showers and baths once the weather cools off. Getting your water heater inspected for problems now can save you a world of difficulty once winter sets in and you really need all the hot water you can get.

As we mentioned before, we still have a lot more warm weather to enjoy, so these tips are just meant to help you get a start on your fall plumbing tasks. If you have questions or spot a plumbing concern, remember that your friends at Midway Plumbing are always here to help.
