When Is It Time For a Pipe Replacement?

When properly maintained, you generally don’t need to do much more to your pipes. Plumbing generally only needs to get replaced in full about once every 80 years. So it’s statistically likely that you’ll only ever have to deal with a full system replacement once in your life. But when a pipe replacement is necessary, it’s really necessary. Old and faulty systems can lead to rust-filled water, clogging, and other unpleasant issues.

But how do you know that it’s time for a replacement when the time comes? There are some tell-tale signs to watch out for to let you know that it’s time to make the call.

Low Water Pressure

Is there less water in the shower? What about at the kitchen sink? If your bathing or dish cleaning is being negatively impacted by low water pressure, it may be time to get your pipes upgraded and/or replaced. When plumbing reaches the end of it’s lifespan, it is prone to clogging or leaks, both of which are prime causes of low water pressure.

Water Discoloration

This one is fairly obvious. If your water is coming out discolored in any way, it could be a sign of a broken pipe. Brown-tinged water is often an indicator that dirt is seeping into your pipes from the ground outside, or that the interior of your pipes is corroded with rust. Either way, water should not be coming out any other color than clear.

Exposed Pipes

Most homes constructed in the 50’s and before have exposed pipes somewhere in the house. Generally speaking, these exposed pipes can be a good litmus test for the health of your system as a whole. If these exposed sections are in poor condition, there’s a good chance it’s time to call in the professionals to replace them.

Waiting too long to replace or upgrade your pipes can be disastrous for your overall plumbing system. While it is usually a pricey project, ignoring it until it’s too late amplifies costs exponentially. If you notice any of these red flags with your plumbing, call a licensed professional immediately. They’ll arrive, assess the situation, and determine the best course of action going forward.
